COVID-19 Data Dashboard updates: What’s changing & why

More than three years ago, COVID-19 emerged as a new respiratory infection never experienced before. Today, we know and understand COVID-19 infections better, and the once-unknown illness has become endemic not only in the U.S., but the world.

Now that COVID-19 is a common respiratory illness, it is time to adjust our surveillance reports to align with other respiratory illnesses such as the flu and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

Updated COVID-19 Data Dashboard

The COVID-19 Data Dashboard will be updated on Oct. 4 to represent COVID-19 trends and data in a way that will allow for quick analysis of trends in Arizona and its counties. It will continue to represent the severity of the cases, as well as the demographics of communities being impacted by the virus.

Data that will remain visible within the dashboard, but with a new look:

Cases by week
Demographics
Deaths
Hospitalizations

Removed COVID-19 data

This transition will also remove some data. These data are being removed because the data they provide are no longer applicable or due to changes in reporting requirements, no longer receive enough data to provide full context of county and state conditions.

The data that will be removed:

Cases by ZIP code
Vaccinations by ZIP code
Congregate Settings with Positive COVID-19 Cases
Hospital COVID-like and Influenza-like Surveillance

Historical COVID-19 Data Dashboards that will no longer be updated

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many large community initiatives, such as community vaccine distribution and administration as well as an increase in community testing availability.

In order to allow us to continue to reflect on and learn from these efforts, some data will be converted into historical dashboards. These historical dashboards will remain publicly available, but will no longer be updated and will remain as a static version.

Historical dashboards that will remain available in a static state:

Vaccine Administration
Laboratory Testing
Vaccination Coverage by Age

These dashboard changes will be viewable on our COVID-19 Data Dashboard page. Our hope is that these updates will help tell the story of how COVID-19 is impacting the community in an easier, more digestible manner. We look forward to sharing the updated dashboards with you soon.

Dr. Eugene Livar is the Assistant Director for Public Health Preparedness at the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS). Eugene has been part of the ADHS team since 2012. He began his public health work at ADHS as an epidemiologist assisting with state efforts covering border health and unexplained deaths. Since then, he has held roles as Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) program manager, Office Chief of Disease Integration and Services, and Bureau Chief of Epidemiology and Disease Control. Eugene has assisted with multiple Health Emergency Operations Center responses during his time at ADHS. In his current role, he leads the division of Public Health Preparedness that encompasses the Bureaus of Emergency Medical Services & Trauma Systems, Environmental Health Services, Immunization Services, Infectious Disease & Services, Public Health Emergency Preparedness, and State Laboratory Services.
