Leveraging Community Partners for Change

By |2011-12-09T08:07:33-07:00December 9th, 2011|Prevention|

A few months ago our tobacco & chronic disease prevention team was awarded a CDC grant to increase coordination and collaboration on evidence-based interventions addressing the leading causes of chronic diseases in Arizona (heart disease, cancer, pulmonary disease, stroke, diabetes, and arthritis).  The Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion grant will look for ways we [...]

A Virus is Born

By |2017-02-10T09:51:25-07:00December 5th, 2011|General, Preparedness|

The CDC confirmed the birth of a new influenza virus in this week’s MMWR Weekly Report.  The newborn is named “Swine-origin Triple Reassortant Influenza A (H3N2) (S-OtrH3N2)”.  The hybrid virus was found in a handful of school-age kids in Iowa recently- and luckily the kids recovered and none were hospitalized.  Nobody outside the initial cluster has been infected [...]

Thanksgiving Food Safety

By |2017-02-10T09:51:26-07:00November 21st, 2011|General|

We have 2 peak periods for foodborne illnesses in Arizona.  One peak is in the summer months because it’s so stinkin’ hot and food gets out of temperature.  The other peak is between Thanksgiving and the New Year.  We’re not sure why we have an increase if foodborne illnesses from now until the end of [...]

State Health Officer’s Meeting Summary

By |2017-02-10T09:51:28-07:00October 27th, 2011|General|

I was fortunate to be able to attend parts of this year’s conference of state health officers in Portland. Each year the folks in my job get together with the CDC and other federal partners and public health support organizations to strategize about the coming year’s national public health priorities and share best practices and resources.  The [...]

Arizona’s Food Safety Network

By |2017-02-10T09:51:31-07:00October 11th, 2011|General, Prevention|

The Listeria monocytogenes outbreak has captured the public’s attention these days- so I thought I’d do a piece on Arizona’s food safety network. Let’s start at the farm & ranch.  The Arizona Department of Agriculture is responsible for ensuring that the base of the food safety pyramid is solid in Arizona.  They have several divisions that are [...]

By |2011-10-04T08:59:18-07:00October 4th, 2011|General|

Great news!  The CDC gave us a heads up this week that AZ will be receiving a new $842,000 Chronic Disease Prevention & Health Promotion grant.  While all states were guaranteed $300,000 on a non-competitive basis, we successfully competed for a supplemental award.  We’ll be able to be able to address the leading causes of [...]

Contagion

By |2017-02-10T09:51:35-07:00September 9th, 2011|General, Preparedness, Prevention|

In all my years in public health this is the first crack I’ve taken at being a movie critic- so give me a little slack on this one.  I checked out the new movie called Contagion- and really liked it. I won’t give up too much information and spoil the film, but it’s basically a fictional [...]

Lunch!

By |2017-02-10T09:51:35-07:00September 6th, 2011|General|

Some of my most memorable moments of elementary school are about things that happened at lunchtime.  Back in the day, lunchtime lasted just as long as all the other periods.  It’s still that way in some places- but in others lunch hasn’t been competing for time as successfully with the other academic priorities. The School [...]

Extreme Heat Video

By |2011-08-31T08:57:12-07:00August 31st, 2011|General, Prevention|

Last summer we applied for funding from the CDC under the Climate-Ready Initiative to develop the Extreme Weather and Public Health materials.  The program is focusing on heat related illnesses and ways to increase knowledge of healthy responses to excessive heat situations.  The program worked with Kate Hoy and Dallas Teat to produce a training [...]
