Prevention

Topics here will include issues that fall into the Prevention Division of the agency, which include – as the name implies – programs that help prevent disease in our state. You will find information about chronic diseases (cancer, heart health, breathing disorders) as well as tobacco use prevention. This area also includes education about Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the Women, Infant and Children programs; both USDA programs that help provide nutrition to lower income residents.

By |2012-09-10T08:33:54-07:00September 10th, 2012|Prevention|

I’m happy to share our new Arizona Chronic Disease Strategic Plan.  This past year, our team from the Bureau of Tobacco & Chronic Disease worked with community partners from across the state on a new guiding document for chronic disease prevention and health promotion.  This strategic plan will be used by ADHS, county health departments, and community partners [...]

Protecting the health and wellbeing of our children is critical to the future of Arizona. September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Arizona ranks 15th in the nation in childhood obesity with almost 18% of Arizona children (10 to 17) being obese. Obesity puts our children at early risk for conditions we normally associate with [...]

Community Water Fluoridation – An Evidence Review

By |2017-02-10T09:51:01-07:00September 5th, 2012|General, Prevention|

I've written a few times about fluoridation - about it being an inexpensive public health intervention and the benefits of fluoride when the EPA and HHS changed the how much they recommend to add to the water supply. But it's always an interesting topic to revisit. Recently, the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College [...]

Global Stakeholders

By |2017-02-10T09:51:01-07:00August 30th, 2012|Preparedness, Prevention|

I often get good feedback about the things that we're accomplishing and the decisions that we're making... but it's not often that I get feedback from the other side of the globe- but that's just what happened this week. Kyoung-Jun Song, MD, an emergency physician in South Korea sent me an e-mail this week thanking [...]

Tattoo You 2

By |2017-02-10T09:51:02-07:00August 23rd, 2012|General, Preparedness, Prevention|

Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released information about an infection some folks were getting because of the ink used in their tattoos.  It reminds me that there are some good practices that folks who want tattoos can ask their artist about - I wrote about it last year in Tattoo You? Regardless [...]

By |2012-08-14T10:24:36-07:00August 14th, 2012|Prevention|

More good news…  starting last week- more uninsured women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer will be eligible to receive comprehensive treatment through Arizona’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program (which is administered by AHCCCS).  In the past, only women diagnosed through Well Woman HealthCheck were able to access treatment through the Program.   The American Cancer [...]

A Boost for Safety

By |2012-08-13T08:56:56-07:00August 13th, 2012|General, Prevention|

Booster seats dramatically lower the risk of suffering internal damage, serious spinal injury or worse for kids between 5 and 8 years old.  In  fact, 100% of kids ages 5-8, who were killed in Arizona car crashes in 2010 weren’t restrained in a booster seat.    For years, the AZ's Child Fatality Review Team recommended a booster seat [...]

That Stubborn Whooping Cough

By |2017-02-10T09:51:06-07:00July 31st, 2012|Prevention|

Whooping Cough is making headlines again – with more than 18,000 cases in the U.S. and 600 cases so far this year in AZ.  You might wonder why we continue to have lots of whooping cough cases in the US and AZ when the other vaccine preventable diseases are real rare (e.g. measles, mumps etc.).  [...]

By |2017-02-10T09:51:06-07:00July 25th, 2012|Prevention|

Awhile back, our epidemiology and licensing team of disease detectives including Jason Lempp, Cara Christ, Vinita Oberoi, Jessica Rigler, Ken Komatsu, Kathy McCanna, Connie Belden, Ken Komatsu, and Shoana Anderson learned of a severe case of a Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus  (MRSA) through our 24-hour disease reporting system.  Our team quickly contacted the county public health department which immediately began an [...]

Treatment as Prevention

By |2017-02-10T09:51:06-07:00July 24th, 2012|Prevention|

The use of successful antiretroviral medicines in the 1990s was a game changer for HIV by reducing deaths.  Now, it’s changing the game again. While the new med’s were originally developed to keep people living with HIV/AIDS healthier and alive longer- the new med’s are good enough to be used as a prevention method. Using [...]
