Sliding Fee Clinics Help Increase Access to Healthcare

April 23rd, 2013

For many uninsured Arizonans, a doctor’s visit is a luxury that they simply can’t afford. That is unless they’re visiting a Sliding Fee Schedule Clinic.  These clinics are a vital part of our healthcare system and provide a broad range of primary care, dental and mental health services to uninsured patients regardless of their ability to pay.  Patients at these clinics are screened for income and insurance status and may pay nothing or a nominal fee for their visit based on their gross income, family size and current federal poverty guidelines.

Our Bureau of Health Systems Development team recently put together an interactive map of all of the a Sliding Fee Schedule Clinics in Arizona- along with links to their websites and contact information.  It’s an excellent resource for finding the clinic nearest to you.  If you’re interested in learning more about Sliding Fee Schedule clinics or would like information on developing or implementing a sliding fee schedule in your clinic, you can visit the SFS Clinic web page.

Mission of Mercy

December 7th, 2012

Oral health is more than a nice smile.  Having good oral health improves a person’s ability to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, and eat.  Plus, tooth decay and gum disease have been linked with other health problems like heart disease, stroke and diabetes, as well as premature births.  Given the link between oral diseases and other systemic health problems, it’s critical to maintain good oral health.

To help folks who desperately need dental care, the Central Arizona Dental Society Foundation will host its first AZ Mission of Mercy event at the Arizona Fairgrounds December 7-8 using portable dental equipment and 1,000 volunteers.   Dental screenings and services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge.  About $1M in free care is expected to be delivered to 2,000 patients (both adults and kids).  They’ll focus on basic dental care such as fillings, extractions and cleanings.  More than 70 Mission of Mercy dental programs have been conducted since 2000- providing free dental care to local residents who otherwise couldn’t get care. We’re supporting the event through Title V funds and providing health information and resources.

Thanks go out to the following folks from Team ADHS that have volunteered to help out at this important event: Anna Alonzo, Amber Asbury, Stacy Beauregard, Brian Beebe, Elena Beeman, Anita Betancourt, Karen Boswell, Jennifer Botsford, Tracy Chisler, Omar Contreras, Juanita Dailey, Ali De La Trinidad, Willie Dennis, Erica Ferguson, John Fiorentino, Jan Ford, Amanda Gainey, Tiana Galindo, Ann Gardner, Cecilia Gaytan-Newberry, Margaret Hensell, Victoria Mieth, Kimberly Oneill, Elie Partida, Nicholas Pigg, Carmen Ramirez, David Ramirez, Deborah Reardon, Matthew Roach, Crystal Rodriguez, Ruthann Smejkal, Nicole Thurlow, Tina Wagner, Julia Wacloff, Virginia Warren, and Chelley Weber.  Also, thanks go out to Maricopa County Public Health for organizing the vaccine clinic that’ll be there too.

Raising Arizona Babies

Do you know someone who’s pregnant and needs help finding low-cost prenatal care? Someone looking for post-partum depression resources; help with breastfeeding; low-cost dental care; or the nearest WIC clinic?  One great resource that can help is our Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Hotline.  The Hotline (1-800-833-4642) is a statewide service funded by our Title V Maternal and Child Health Block Grant and it helps thousands of callers every year with a variety of maternal and child health issues- like the importance of folic acid- and providing lots of referrals for a variety of community resources.

The Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Hotline also supports AHCCCS’s Baby Arizona program.  Baby Arizona is a faster, simpler way of getting prenatal care before a pregnant woman’s AHCCCS application process is complete. Prenatal care providers across the state agree to see pregnant women while their eligibility is being determined. Once a women goes to the Baby Arizona provider she chooses, the provider helps her apply and pre-enroll her in a health plan. That way, women begin prenatal care at no cost while their eligibility is still being processed.  It’s a great way to facilitate early entry into prenatal care- increasing the likelihood of a healthy birth outcome.  By the way, when a pregnant woman applies for AHCCCS she’s considered a family of 2 (or more if there are multiples)- meaning that she’s not in the “childless adult” category- and wouldn’t be subject to the enrollment freeze for childless adults.

Baja Health Tourism

February 22nd, 2010

The Mexican Federal Government announced a new policy this week to promote medical tourism in Mexico. Medical tourism is when you go abroad for medical care.  Their goal is to encourage U.S. residents (with an initial focus on the uninsured) to travel to Mexico for their medical needs, generating jobs and investment.  Another objective is to use the additional revenue to continue the expansion of the medical infrastructure in Mexico.

Phase I of the policy is to set up the infrastructure for basic and intermediate procedures- with a focus on drawing down folks that are uninsured in the US for things like orthopedics, heart, cancer, dental, ophthalmology and plastic surgery. The goal for Phase II is to get US Citizens (especially Arizonans and Californians) to consider treatment in Mexico for advanced medical services.

Health tourism is also a main priority for the new Governor of Sonora (Padrés Elías) http://www.sonora.gob.mx/ for several reasons, not the least of which is Sonora’s close proximity to large populations in Arizona and California, and that fact that the Hospital CIMA Hermosillo in Hermosillo is certified by the Joint Commission (the largest certification and accreditation of the United States), and it has the capacity to provide high-quality services.  In all, there are 8 hospitals in Mexico that are accredited by the Joint Commission http://www.jointcommissioninternational.org/JCI-Accredited-Organizations/.
