You will find information about chronic diseases (cancer, heart health, breathing disorders) as well as tobacco use prevention. This area also includes education about Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the Women, Infant and Children programs; both USDA programs that help provide nutrition to lower income residents.

Guess the Culprit

By |2017-02-10T09:51:15-07:00March 12th, 2012|Prevention|

Guess which organism killed 14,000 people last year- quadrupling in number in the last 10 years, and costing $1B extra in health care.  Almost all the cases happen among people who recently received medical care.  Ironically, antibiotics are making the problem worse, because when a person takes antibiotics, good germs that protect against infection are [...]

By |2012-03-09T09:33:59-07:00March 9th, 2012|Preparedness, Prevention|

Most folks know that good oral health is needed to prevent oral diseases- which can be progressive, cumulative, and more complex over time.  If left untreated, tooth decay leads to needless pain and suffering; difficulty in speaking, chewing, and swallowing; missed school days; increased cost of care.  There’s also good evidence that poor oral hygiene and [...]

I had the delightful experience of meeting with our former Director, Jack Dillenberg, at our AZ Developmental Disabilities Planning Council meeting last month.  Our Council meeting was out at AT Still University’s AZ School of Dentistry & Oral Health.  It was great seeing Jack again- he hasn't changed a bit- he's just as enthusiastic and animated as ever. Most of [...]

Bite the Bullet

By |2017-02-10T09:51:15-07:00March 1st, 2012|Prevention|

Maybe you’ve read or heard about my experience with my colonoscopy when I turned 50 (OK, I was 51).  For years doctors have recommended getting a colonoscopy when you turn 50.  If doctors see something unusual like a polyp, they can remove it while they're in there - which is what happened to me.  But until this [...]

By |2017-02-10T09:51:17-07:00February 23rd, 2012|General, Prevention|

Bloodstream infections that start because of a “central line” in a person’s body are among the most serious of all healthcare-associated infections- causing thousands of deaths each year and about $700M in added costs.  The CDC estimates that there were about 41,000 infections like these U.S. hospitals last year…  and 25% percent of patients who [...]
