As many Arizonans know, a cluster of small earthquakes occurred near Black Canyon City last night causing minor shaking across parts of the state.  Although no major damage or injuries were reported, this seismic event reminds us that emergencies and disasters can occur when and where we least expect it.

There are some basic things you and your loved ones can do to be prepared for any type of disaster.  The just in case Arizona website covers three simple steps:

1) Prepare a plan,

2) Make a kit, and

3) Be informed.

In some cases, you may need to stay in place and wait for help.  This means having food, water, and supplies on-hand for at least three days.  Other disasters may require you to evacuate at a moment’s notice.  In this case you will need a “To Go” kit.  When preparing your supplies and kits it is very important to consider needs of at-risk people including children, the elderly, and people with on-going medical needs.  Remember critical supplies like prescriptions, infant formula, medical equipment, and a first-aid kit.

Staying informed is the important final step. The Arizona Emergency Information Network is the State’s official online source for emergency updates, preparedness information, and related resources.  In case of an extended power outage, you should also have a battery-powered or hand-crank radio on hand to receive important updates and instructions from emergency responders.
