Viral hepatitis is inflammation of the liver caused by a virus, the most common types being hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. More than five million Americans have chronic hepatitis B or C infections and about 75% of those infected are unaware. Viral hepatitis is the leading cause of liver cancer and the most common reason for liver transplantation. The good news is that most hepatitis A and B infections can be prevented through vaccines, and hepatitis C can be cured with new anti-viral medications.

Did you know that all baby boomers (people born from 1945-1965) should get tested for hepatitis C at least once, and that persons born in Asia or the Pacific Islands, or those whose parents were born there, should be tested for hepatitis B?

Take the CDC Hepatitis Risk Assessment to find out if you should get tested for viral hepatitis and have a conversation with your doctor. To find a location nearest you that offers free testing, the CDC offers a convenient online search tool. Additional resources on hepatitis in Arizona can be found at the ADHS Hepatitis Program website.
