September: Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

September 5th, 2012

Protecting the health and wellbeing of our children is critical to the future of Arizona. September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Arizona ranks 15th in the nation in childhood obesity with almost 18% of Arizona children (10 to 17) being obese. Obesity puts our children at early risk for conditions we normally associate with adulthood – Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stroke.

Obesity has other consequences that can hinder these kids academically and socially. This September we have an opportunity to build awareness about the issue across several Arizona cities, communities and organizations.  Our strategic plan identifies “Promoting Nutrition and Physical Activity to Reduce Obesity” as one a winnable battle.  We have started several programs to help achieve that – things like integrating physical activity into our everyday lives, making healthy foods available everywhere, activating employers and healthcare providers, strengthening schools and preschools as the heart of health, and marketing what matters for a healthy life.

Adults have an opportunity to help young people get a healthy start in life.  We work hard to protect our children from danger – if we think of obesity as a threat like a drug dealer, we can easily imagine our reaction. We have the power to change the future – we can remove the threat  by removing obstacles to healthy living and creating more opportunities to be healthy.  My counterpart at the Department of Economic Security, Director Clarence Carter, speaks about the mission we need to take on to change the course for our children in his blog.

We have to work together to change the course of obesity in our state.  Our future depends on it.

Diabetes Awareness

February 22nd, 2011

More than 10% of Arizonans have diabetes.  But what’s even more alarming are the recent estimate by the CDC that about 1.5 million Arizonans (25%) have pre-diabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be considered diabetes.  Pre-diabetes significantly raises a person’s risk of Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

To see if you’re at risk, visit www.azdiabetes.gov and click on the “Arizona Diabetes Program,” and then select the “Are You at Risk ?” button, which will direct you to our online risk assessment tool.  There’s a lot you can do to reduce your risk of getting diabetes, including eating healthy and exercising.  In fact, losing weight is a great way to reduce your risk as well – losing just 5% of total body weight can reduce a person’s risk.  For a 200 lb. person, that means they’d need to lose less than 15 lbs.

Statewide, the YMCA offers diabetes an evidence-based education and prevention program that’s open to adults who have a diagnosis of pre-diabetes or who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) at or over 25 (a risk factors for Type 2 Diabetes). For more information about diabetes, including Diabetes Self-Management classes, contact the Arizona Diabetes Program at www.azdiabetes.gov.

Out of Control Diabetes Treatment Costs

February 17th, 2010

The US obesity epidemic is costing Americans more and more each year.  It’s not just the decreased quality of life that it causes, but it causes a whole host of downstream problems like diabetes and circulatory problems.  Type 2 diabetes had been a disease of folks over 40 that became seriously overweight over time- but it’s increasingly becoming a pediatric disease.  The Medicaid, Medicare and regular private insurance treatment costs for Type 2 diabetes is rapidly increasing- and becoming not just an epidemic- but a financial crisis as well.

Researchers from the journal Diabetes Care published a paper recently http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/32/12/2225.full that projects that over the next 25 years, the number of Americans with diabetes will increase from 24 million to 44 million. During the same time period, annual spending related to diabetes is expected to increase from the current $113 billion to $336 billion (in constant $2007).

The health care costs for treating diabetes in AZ today is about $2 Billion dollars annually- and if we don’t do something about this epidemic with a better diet and exercise, the costs will be nearly $7 Billion annually in AZ- again in constant dollars.

Now pause for a second and take a breath… the out year costs for treating diabetes nationally are projected to be almost half the size of the financial bailout or the ARRA stimulus package every year (if we don’t do something about this epidemic).
